…..in a manner of speaking…..

Sample_Picture04It happens to the best of us. One day you look up from whatever you’re busily doing regarding your business, whether it be creating a Email newsletter, concocting new recipes, writing copy for your next ad flyer or mapping out the next few months. You realize that you don’t want to do this any more. Either you’re bored, tired or just don’t really care about your particular line of business any more. You’re ready for a change…..right?

You might be. First, step back, take a deep breath – do you really want to get out of the business completely, or do you just need a break. Sometimes a vacation from your business gives you the time to get just the right perspective on what you’re doing or not doing correctly. So before you throw in the towel and give it up – take a break. If you come back to your business with the exact same attitude, then it is truly time for a change.

I began writing this article this morning because this was just the type of issue I experienced a few weeks ago. I was in the natural bath and body business – creating my own body products from scratch – for the last two years. I spent a lot of time and money creating, promoting and selling, and actually turned a profit the end of my second year in business. A slim profit, but a profit nonetheless. Then, into my third year, I got bored. Now, knowing how I am as a person, I tried to ride it out. I took a few breaks, tried to change direction a bit, but came to the conclusion in October of this year, that I was finished. I……for lack of a better term, quit.

This was not an easy decision. When I looked around and saw all these bottles, jars, tubes, fragrance oils….all the tools of my (former) trade lying around, I thought, gee, what a waste of money. But, dear reader, let me assure you that it was not a waste. The knowledge that I gained in those three years in business were invaluable. I also learned what was worth paying for and what was NOT worth paying for, especially if you’re a DSC03664crafter/home business.

I write all this to say to those of you out there who have just had it – sit back, reflect, and if you are really not enjoying what you are doing, QUIT. Cut your losses, move on! Do something that you truly enjoy, or you will never prosper at it.
